POP Errors in Outlook Express
“POP”, as a lot of you will definitely be aware of by now, is short for “Post Office Protocol”. And as such, it is used in actively downloading new messages from your ISP to your computer, and then into your email client/application.
Now in getting on with our article and the task at hand, Outlook Express and its help team explains that a user with POP setup shares a risk of encountering unaccounted errors (which we commonly refer to as Outlook Express errors) with pop-up messages prompting obscure server responses.
Given below is a more detailed discussion on the same Outlook Express errors and the conditions leading up to it.
Status Codes
In light of unaccounted conditions such as your email server being unresponsive, that your password is incorrect or also if your server is down with internal problems, “Status Codes” are meant to relay and make aware of the condition to you as a user in helping you formulate an effective workaround to the problem.
Fortunately for a POP server, it is very clear about its status. And as such, the team explains that the only 2 replies it is familiar with is the positive “+OK” and the negative “-ERR” (even though both the codes might be a bit unspecific when it comes to actually figuring out what went wrong).
And while POP servers are not required to offer additional information’s, most do.
Reasons for your error messages
Now, the first thing that can result in Outlook Express errors would be with the POP server not being able to recognize your user name. Chances are you may have typed it wrong or maybe the server database is down. And as such, you will be displayed with an error message:
“-ERR mailbox unknown”
The next possible reason could be your password not matching your username displaying the error message:
“-ERR invalid password”
Also understand that a POP mailbox can only be accessed by one incoming connection at a time. If your mail checker has already been logged into your email account, chances are your email program cannot access the account at the same time. And as such, you will be greeted by an error message saying
“-ERR unable to lock mailbox”
However, when successfully logged into the account, a POP client will automatically begin retrieving your messages. But while requesting the same, a negative response is quite possible:

“-ERR no such message”
Finally, when a POP session is ended, all messages marked for deletion are usually deleted by the server. However, failure in doing so prompts you with
“-ERR some deleted messages not removed”
These are some of the errors you might find in your Outlook Express. Ciao!
